Sessions

1. An Overview of Church Planting
This session delves into the foundational principles of church planting, examining both biblical and practical motivations. It underscores biblical reasons such as reproduction, sowing and reaping, and fulfilling the Great Commission. The session also addresses practical needs, highlighting the effectiveness of smaller churches in evangelism and the global demand for Evangelical centers. Various methods, including mother-daughter church planting and sending church-planting teams, are explored. Drawing insights from the successful church-planting ministry of Abbott Loop Community Church, participants are encouraged to grasp the essential aspects of church planting. This session sets the stage for understanding the diverse methods employed and the transformative impact of church planting on communities.

2. The Local Church as a Ministry Training Center
Expressing gratitude for the interest in team-based church planting, this session delves into the biblical foundation and practical reasons for utilizing the local church as a center for ministry training. Stressing the absence of explicit mentions of external training institutions in the New Testament, it references Antioch and Ephesus to exemplify Paul’s teaching within local churches. Practical benefits of local training, such as personalized oversight and exposure to diverse ministries, are explored. The session encourages churches, regardless of size, to establish dynamic ministry training programs by identifying ministry trainers and implementing various teaching methods. Emphasizing a solid foundation on Jesus Christ and His Word, it provides actionable steps for churches to become effective centers for comprehensive ministry training.

3. Vocational Ministers in the Local Church
Session 3: “Vocational Ministers in the Local Church” This session underscores the critical role of local churches in reproducing and training ministers, specifically focusing on vocational counseling. Drawing from Proverbs 15:22 and the example of Antioch’s leaders in Acts 13:1-3, it establishes the biblical basis for counseling within the local church. Emphasizing the need for accurate discernment, the session delves into the three key factors of vocational counseling: calling, timing, and geographical placement. It explores the biblical foundation for vocational counseling, stressing the importance of wise leadership. The session concludes with a global call for local churches to recognize their unique ability to train ministers and effectively impact their communities for Christ.

4. Identifying Church-Planting Teams
This session delves into the crucial task of identifying church-planting teams within the local church. Highlighting the central role of a called and qualified pastor/team leader, it underscores the importance of a pioneer’s call and adherence to biblical qualifications. Character traits, vision, humility, and essential skills are deemed vital for a successful church-planting pastor. The session then explores the emergence of qualified team members, stressing their divine calling, biblical qualifications, and alignment with the team leader. The qualities of love, loyalty, servant-heartedness, evangelistic fervor, integrity, and a strong work ethic are highlighted as indispensable for effective church-planting team members.

5. Preparing and Sending the Church-Planting Team
This session details the church planting process, emphasizing the pivotal role of a robust local church. It involves instilling an outreach vision, comprehensive training, and prayerful discernment of individual callings. Extensive counseling ensures harmony within the team, and elders ordain the team pastor before sending them forth. Regular meetings and practicing church services help build cohesion among team members. A “scouting trip” is recommended for the team pastor to gather essential information about the new location. The session concludes with the formal sending of the team, highlighting the ongoing support and follow-up by mature ministers from the sending church.

About the Instructor

Dr. Jim Feeney

James (Jim) Feeney is a seasoned minister with over 50 years of experience, has left an indelible mark on the realms of church planting, pastoring, and theological education. Born in 1943 into a Catholic family with an FBI agent father and a devoted mother, Jim’s spiritual journey took unexpected turns from his Catholic roots to a transformative encounter with Jesus Christ.

His educational journey led him through Boston College, the University of Pittsburgh, and Santa Clara University, culminating in an MBA and a Ph.D. in Church Administration. A brief but impactful stint in the United States Air Force, where he earned his commercial pilot license, set the stage for a career shift towards Christian ministry.

In Anchorage, Alaska, in 1968, a chance meeting with a Christian college girl, known as “Mickey,” became the catalyst for Jim’s profound spiritual transformation. A pivotal moment in 1969, marked by reading the New Testament, led to a heartfelt commitment to Jesus Christ, forever altering the trajectory of his life.

Following his military service, Jim embarked on a journey of ministry, first at Abbott Loop Christian Center, where he received ordination as both a Bible teacher and a pastor. Over the years, he planted churches in New York and Oregon, notably pioneering Medford Christian Center, where he pastored for 17 years. During this time, Pastor Richard (Dick) Benjamin at Abbott Loop Christian Center became a “spiritual father” figure, significantly influencing Jim’s spiritual formation. You can watch Dick Benjamin’s course on Biblical Eldership in Trimester 5.

Jim’s impact extends beyond the pulpit. His doctoral dissertation—found in the book The Team Method of Church Planting—inspired the core philosophy of the International School of Ministry (ISOM), the world’s largest video Bible school.

In his personal life, Jim’s 38-year marriage to Mickey was marked by faith, healing, and the joy of raising four children. After her passing, Jim found love again with Linda, celebrating five years of marriage in 2016. Together, they joyfully attend New Song Christian Fellowship in Springfield, Oregon.

Retiring from full-time ministry in 2006, Jim now cherishes the richness of each life chapter—his secure childhood, transformative spiritual discoveries, and the love shared with both Mickey and Linda. Grateful for the past, Jim remains dedicated to serving the Lord and his family in the years ahead.
